SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Homelessness among teenagers in San Francisco has spiked in the last year, officials said Monday, as researchers said the city's recent sweeping crackdown on public encampments has been a big help.
According to a report by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, this summer teens aged 14 to 17 represent about 28 percent of the homeless youth population, up from about 20 percent last year. During the same period, the city's juvenile justice department made more than 3,000 referrals to shelter beds for youths. That's up from about 2,500 last year.
The city said in a statement that the situation requires a closer look by the health department. It pointed to programs targeting homeless teens like one that paired about 60 teens in a mentoring program with instructors to teach them about finances, employment and career paths.
"If we see an increase in youth homelessness, that's a clear sign we need to focus on that group," said Alex Katz, a city spokesman. "Our hope is that all youth feel safe and are provided with the support they need to make positive changes."
The report was compiled by the city's health department based on data collected by public health officials and the department's homeless outreach services.
Teenagers were found to be one of the groups with the highest numbers of public hospitalizations this summer, with a slight increase compared to last year.
Researchers also found that youth who are receiving mental health treatment and are using drugs, alcohol or other substances are more likely to become homeless.
The report did not include data for homeless teens in other cities, but similar spikes in the last year have been reported in neighboring Oakland and San Jose, and statewide in recent years.
Meanwhile, researchers said the city's crackdown on public encampments in recent months has been a major factor in making the city safer for homeless youths.
